Chickamauga Dam was constructed by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) during the period 1942-1945. Significant cracking and deflections have been observed over the years. Petrographic examinations were made on concrete samples taken from the dam that indicate alkali-aggregate reaction (AAR) is occurring. Initial test results concluded the AAR is a type of alkali-carbonate. Later tests indicate that the alkali-silica type was also present with the majority being the carbonate type.
