The Sediment and Stormwater Program of Delaware's Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) takes a four-pronged approach to our ongoing education and training efforts. They are: 1) Certification Training; 2) Program Initiative Training; 3) Education of the General Public; and 4) A National Conference. A component is added to all four elements to maximize the transfer of information from the chalkboard to the field. Our Certification Program consists of two courses that are required of individuals who wish to perform construction related activities in the State of Delaware. The Certified Construction Reviewers Course certifies students to perform construction inspections. The second part of our Certification Program is the Contractor's Training Course. Attending an intensive four hour class on erosion and sediment control certifies the individual to conduct construction activities in Delaware in accordance with state law. The frequency with which new erosion and sediment control techniques become available necessitates DNREC's Program Initiative Training. Workshops and training sessions are held to pass on the specifics of new initiatives and technologies. Many events take place during the year which result in Education of the General Public. The Sediment and Stormwater Program staff participates in the State Fair, the annual Water Festival, school programs, and Envirothon among other events. We also regularly contribute to Homeowners Association meetings and field tours sponsored by state and municipal entities. Our bi-annual National Conference is well known for attracting innovators in erosion control and stormwater management. The conference allows the regulated community to see the national picture, reinforcing the importance of field implementation. Field trips and handson demonstrations are offered for each of these programs to ensure that instruction leads to field implementation.
