Wavelet analysis has been successfully utilized in the decomposition of transient signals. In this paper it was shown how this new technique can be utilized for the analysis of dispersive ultrasonic signals. In particular the concept of an analytic wavelet function and of wavelet ridges was presented. Ridges in the modulus of the transform determine regions in the time and frequency domain with high concentrations of acoustic energy; hence they are the natural candidates for the characterization and reconstruction of the ultrasonic signal. Experimental results on plate modes were presented to show the usefulness of the proposed technique.
