Fifty three subjects were asked to judge sign pairs as being visually identical or as having the same meaning. Signs pairs were identical signs, a symbol and a word sign of the same meaning, or signs of different meanings. Response latencies and accuracies were recorded. Latencies were faster, and accuracies generally lower, when the second sign followed the first by 500 msec than when signs were presented simultaneously. For identical signs, accuracies for both physical and meaning match judgments were high. Accuracies were lower for pairs of symbol and word signs of the same meaning. Merge and Keep signs with Left and Right directions produced high latencies and low accuracies for both physical and meaning match judgements.
