Over the past 5 years of operating a 2 Coat Ecoat system (2CEC), throughput yield has improved by 50% while at the same time improving quality by reducing defects, equipment down time, chemical issues, and filtration issues using OMIR and process controls. Ecoat systems can produce a single defect caused by a number of different issues. For example, dirt on the final product can be a result of oven issues, anode issues, caustic carryover, racking issues or lining degradation, just to name a few. Pin holes can be produced by improper greasing of equipment, pipe restrictions, wrong pump selection or paint contamination. A major contributor to producing a quality part from a system or systems comes from proper PM's and TPM's. Through close process monitoring of critical parameters such as pH, solid and conductivity, one can stay on top of maintaining and improving the quality of the finished product for the customer. Having evaluated the cost effectiveness of top-coating products with ecoat vs. powder vs. liquid paint, ecoat has proven to be the most cost effective application due to film build capabilities and operating costs.
