Biological tissue is removed by a laser system, with a ring catheter with optical fibres for transmitting laser light to the point where tissue is to be removed. The inner cavity of the ring is not concentric. A C-arm X-ray unit or ultrasonic unit is guided around the removal point for an evaluation and control unit which directs laser light only to discrete sectors of the optical fibre. USE/ADVANTAGE - E.g. for treatment of narrowing of vessel, or in veterinary or plant treatment. Controlled removal of tissue, without danger of perforation of artery walls. Loading of artery by laser pulse is reduced by selection of catheter region, and catheter speed of movement is increased.
