PPAP (Production Part Approval Process) is a process that provides evidence that a manufacturing process has the capability of producing a product that meets that product's specification requirements. It defines the requirements for production part approval including bulk materials such as paint. The term PPAP is often used with a negative connotation. Many hear those words and immediately think of extra work, headaches, and a large paper trail. If done properly, PPAP does not have to be a complicated process. Once the requirements are understood, PPAP can be easily met with little disruption in everyday activities. For bulk materials such as electro deposition paint, the customer, ecoater, and paint supplier work together under the guidelines of PPAP to accomplish what is needed for approval. As you will see, the paint supplier is responsible for a very large piece of the PPAP activities and documentation. When properly followed, PPAP can be an efficient process that ultimately helps coaters meet their goals.
