Locked-in syndrome (LIS), also known as pseudo coma, is a condition in which a patient is conscious but cannot move or communicate verbally due to complete paralysis of nearly all voluntary muscles in the body except for vertical and horizontal eye movements and blinking. This restricts patients from communicating. Eye movements can be used as alternative inputs for human-computer interface (HCI) systems such as virtual or augmented reality systems as well as new communication ways for patients with locked-in syndrome. The proposed project is a real-time electrooculogram (EOG)-based eye-pattern recognition system, with which patients can speak out predefined sentences with their volitional eye movements. For the "eye-speaking" recognition, the proposed system identifies the eye movement by setting threshold voltages of various eye patterns. On proper classification, control signals are generated which drives Arduino powered speaker.
