Design of flapping wing mechanism for bionic micro aerial vehicle

Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAVs) are class of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles characterized by their small size. MAVs have gained popularity in last decades because of their wide range of applications. Recent development in research on bird flight, with emphasis on unsteady flapping flight has motivated researchers to design MAVs inspired by nature. Despite several efforts towards biomimicking for MAV designs, few research has met with success in developing flapping wing mechanisms. In this article, development of new flapping wing mechanism inspired from the 'Common Swift' with potential to be utilized in bionic MAV is discussed. Mimicking the kinematics of Common swift, the mechanism allows elliptical wing tip movement and active wing rotation which bring novelty to the design.
