One of the major points of emphasis in the implementation of recent FDA guidances calls for more veterinary oversight of medically important antibiotics used in food producing animals. Only veterinarians with valid veterinarian-client-patient-relationship (VCPR) can prescribe medically important antibiotics. With this emphasis, there is a need to clarify the roles and responsibilities of veterinarians in establishing a valid VCPR, providing clients with compliant treatment plans, prescriptions, and veterinary feed directives (VFDs) while utilizing best practices for streamlining the documentation process through web-based solutions.
