Deoxynivalenol (DONJ, a mycotoxin, is produced by Fttsarium graminearum, that is commonly found in corn, other grains, and their processed co-products, and less commonly by Fusarium culmorum. DON is most prevalent when wet conditions are present before and during harvest. F. gmminearum (Gibberella zeae) and F. culmorum produce both DON and zearalenone, and contaminated feedstuffs may contain both mycotoxins. DON contamination of grains can lead to reductions in feed intake and performance when fed toswine. Levels as low as 1 ppm of DON negatively impact feed intake (ADFI) and daily gain (ADG),1 with intake being reduced linearly as levels of DON increase further.2 In addition, DON negatively impacts intestinal barrier function, impairs the immune system, and increases oxidative stress.
