Expressions such as anti-dirt,anti-stain,anti-soil,anti-graffiti,easy-to-care,and easy-to-clean are meanings for virtually the same phenomenon: surface repellency of solid powder particles and liquids.An easy-to-clean effect can be achieved by creating high hydrophobic or high hydrophilic surfaces and by using structure-giving particles or by preparation of surfaces.For an additive producer it is very challenging to develop an additive for different formulations irrespective of the chemistry of the coating system.This paper will illustrate the stages of the easy-to-clean hydrophobic additives developed in the last decade and provide an explanation for their behavior in relation to the chemistry involved.
