Omega-3 Fatty Acids Production from Microalgae

Omega 3 is polyunsaturated fatty acids that give positive effect to the human health especially in reducing heart disease and cancer. Derivatives product of Omega 3 are α- linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA;) . The major sources for EPA and DHA are fish oil. Availability of fish is highly dependent on season which, may hamper the continuity of food and Omega 3 production. Therefore, there is an increasing demand for the finding of alternative source of Omega 3 such as eukaryotic marine microorganisms (1). In this study, the production of Omega 3 from marine microalgae; Isochrysis galbana and Tetraselmis sp. were investigated.
