Myosin, kinesin and ATPase are typical molecular machines in nature that function in muscle contraction or cellular events including mitosis, meiosis and so on. On the other hand, many examples of artificial molecular machines function as molecular shuttles, molecular elevator and molecular memory. Most of them possess rotaxane structures, which consist of an axis having bulky stoppers at both ends and one or several ring molecules. Typical rotaxanes, in which position of the ring part is controlled by external stimuli such as heat, light and redox, are called molecular shuttles.
