Graphene nanoribbon (GNR) are quasi one-dimensional sheets of graphene that, like their parent material, show much promise as the conducting and semiconducting components of nano-scale electronic devices. The electronic properties of GNR are largely governed by their edge structure, as well as the width of the ribbon, and result in a variety of different band gap options ranging from metallic to semiconducting. Unfortunately, the widespread implementation of GNR into electronic devices has yet to be realized, as methods for the synthesis of GNR in a precise and scalable fashion are currently lacking.
