Salmonella is an increasing public health concern, with the emergence of multi-drug resistant strains. Pigs are often asymptomatic Salmonella carriers and during periods or stress, such as weaning, may shed Salmonella in feces and colonize the bacteria in tissue. This may result in animal to human transmission through pork, contaminated produce, or groundwater contamination. On-farm control of Salmonella has proven difficult and there is need for a practical and inexpensive solution. Flavophospholipol is a phos-phoglycolipid antimicrobial agent used in swine and poultry as an antimicrobial growth promoter (AMGP). Previous studies have suggested flavophospholipol, an antibiotic with non-transferable resistance, may alter the microflora in favour of beneficial bacteria, and lead to reduced Salmonella shedding and colonization.
