Solution combustion method at altered temperature was employed for the synthesis of undoped and Sm~(3+) doped MgAl_2O_4 phosphor. X-ray diffraction (XRD), photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy and UV-Vis spectroscopic techniques were used for the characterization of phosphor. XRD results confirmed that the phosphor synthesized at 600 °C was in a single phase and belong to the cubic structure of the MgAl_2O_4. Under 410 nm excitation, the phosphor exhibits emission peaks centered at 574 nm, 616 nm, 659 nm and 693 nm, resulting from ~4G_(5/2) - ~6H_(I/2) (I= 5, 7, 9, 11) transitions of Sm~(3+) ion, respectively. The optimum molar concentration of Sm~(3+) was 3 mol. %. The band gap of phosphor was calculated from the diffused reflectance spectrum and it was found to be ~5.1 eV.
