Exogenous selenium application influences lettuce on bolting and tipburn

Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) is a popular vegetable throughout the world. Early bolting and tipburn are two major problems in lettuce production. Previous studies have showed that the HSP70 family played a crucial role in heat-shock response (Feige et al., 1994) in which tipburn is included (Sylvie et al., 2013). Recent research suggests that besides fighting against the heat, the expression of HSP genes affects bolting in different ways (Passam et al., 2008). We found using q-PCR that the expression of two LsHsp 70 genes are strongly relevant with bolting (Ting et al., 2015). In addition, studies on mice showed that selenium-rich diet hsp70 significantly increased their sperm cells (Kaur et al., 2003). Later research on male mice also observed an increase of hsp70 in the high Se content group (Naveen et al., 2009). In human research, we found that the HSP70 mRNA level in "high Se+F group" was significantly higher compared to "high F group" (Chenetal., 2009). Based on those former studies we assumed that exogenous selenium (Se) application should help lettuce raise its expression of LsHsp 70, and eventually, suppress its bolting and tipburn.
