Feasibility of Using Social Media Analysis for International Safeguards Applications

In order to conduct their safeguards activities, the IAEA seemingly has the legal authority to use all information available to it, including social media. The IAEA has and continues to use social media in support of safeguards verification. As government and research institutions in more Member States gravitate towards social media platforms for disseminating information, the IAEA and Member States will need to address several considerations in order to use social media in a more consistent manner. We have reviewed the IAEA's current legal authorities as well as several potential applications of SMA.
