One approach to understanding how animals and livelihoods are linked, is the United Kingdom Department for International Development's sustainable livelihoods framework [4]. At the core of the livelihoods framework (Figure 1) are five asset categories- human capital, natural capital, financial capital, social capital and physical capital - on which livelihoods are built. These assets are utilised in a number of processes that determine the livelihood status of the household and the wellbeing of itsmembers. Increasing access to a range of assets, through ownership or a right of use to assets, and the utilisation of these assets through processes (livelihoods strategies), is the primary mechanism to a sustainable livelihood and human wellbeing.
