Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC), caused by the synergistic interaction of corrosion andmechanical stress, is an important threat to stainless steels. The evolution of SCC is often related to a transitionfrom the localized corrosion precursor to crack growth [1]. Elucidation of this transition as well as themicroscopic features is expected to enhance the understandingand prediction of SCC progression. In this work, AE monitoringand scanning electron microscope (SEM) based electronbackscattered diffraction (EBSD) analysis were combined toin-situ investigate the SCC initiation of type 420J2 stainless steelunder a chloride solution droplet.
