Background: Bacteriophages or phages are capable of mediating the transfer of virulence genes into non-pathogenic bacteria to cause respiratory tract infection. There has been little progress towards the characterisation of phages in the human respiratory tract [1].Method: This study has performed an unbiased metagenomic survey on the phage communities within the human respiratory tracts of healthy individuals and patients with respiratory tract infection. A reference healthy phage profile was established and compared against the disease phage profile to understand the possible influence of the phages in respiratory diseases.
