Thermal Stability of a Quasi-Isotropic Strand Consisting of Coated Conductors

This paper presents the thermal stability of a quasi-isotropic strand composed of stacked high temperature superconducting coated conductors (CC). The strand was sheathed by metal copper and the internal void was filled by aluminum. The quench characteristics of the strand, including the minimum quench energy (MQE) and the quench propagation velocity (QPV), were simulated by software Comsol 5.0. Then the corresponding stability tests were performed in 77 K. The thermal disturbance was generated in the strand interior by applying an external direct current (DC) magnetic field. It is shown that the experimental results are in agreement with the simulated ones.
