Electromembrane processing for the recovery of low-molecular weight bioactive compounds from model solutions

Nowadays, food and pharmaceutical industries are increasingly interested in the production of bioactive ingredients from natural sources. There is a growing interest for recovery of small compounds (molecular weight below 1kDa) from natural complex media, e.g. plant extracts, agricultural residues or marine products, due to their diverse, bioactive properties such as antimicrobial, anticancerogenic or antioxidant activities. Additionally, the increasing consumer awareness creates a demand and preference for natural products [1].
