The willow minnow (Gnathopogon caerulescens) is a commercially important endemic species of fish found in Lake Biwa, Shiga Prefecture, Japan. However, the mechanism of sex determination is not yet fully understood. In addition to genetics, this species has a temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD) mechanism. In an earlier study, we isolated 4 sex differentiation-related genes (Foxl2, Cypl9a, 42Sp50, and Dmrtl) and investigated their expression in the willow minnow. In this study, to make an expression profile of the 4 genes during each developmental stage, including the phenotypic sex differentiation stages, we investigated their comprehensive expression.
