Structure Analysis of Iodine Doped Polyamide Nylon 6 Complex Films by FTIR Spectroscopy and X‐Ray Diffraction Studies

The structural changes that occur when Polyamide Nylon 6 films are treated with iodine solution in toluene are studied by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X‐ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The bands at 1199.9, 958.8 and 927.9 cm~(-1) attributed to the α phase and bands at 918, 979.5 and 1000 cm~(?1) assigned to the γ phase are confirmed from the IR spectra. X‐ray diffraction studies also support the IR observation that the pristine nylon‐6 films crystallize in the α form and nylon 6‐iodine complex films exists in the γ form. The degree of crystallinity of both the pristine and doped films is quantitatively determined using X‐ray diffractograms and a considerable decrease in the value is found for the latter.
