American Electric Power Company (AEP) uses bridge strand anchors grouted into rock to support guyed-V towers. The anchors have standardized lengths with some adjustments for variable subsurface conditions. This approach provides installation economy by simplifying construction and minimizing the need for testing during production installations. The standard design is based on an allowable grout-to-rock bond stress of 3 ksf (21 psi). AEP conducted tests of anchors installed in soil, limestone, shale, and sandstone to assess the reliability of the anchors in these materials. This paper describes the anchors, the normal design procedure, and the results of the testing program of six anchors. This information is useful in future desiens of these anchors, and in confirming the reliability of the designs.
