Eight Steps to a Lean Enterprise - Going Beyond Lean Manufacturing and into the Office

While many Companies have implemented a Lean Manufacturing Strategy for their plants, few are effectively applying the "waste elimination" concept to their administrative and service processes. This paper provides a vision and methodology for expanding a "Lean Manufacturing" strategy so that it becomes a "Lean Enterprise" strategy, eliminating waste from ALL Core Business processes. Through a logical sequence of activities, an Eight Step process utilizes a variety of Lean Tools such as Value Stream Mapping, Theory of Constraints, Process Modeling, and One-Piece Flow to eliminate waste in administrative and service processes. Examples with results are included. In addition, the Eight-Step process leads to a new strategy for managing the Enterprise and creating a positive culture shift to meet the demands of today's workforce.
