The paper outlines the fuel consumption benefits available from combining the latest state-of-the-art low-friction and de-throttling technologies in a concept demonstrator engine. Most notably this work explored the possibility to combine variable valve lift and cylinder deactivation for the first time in a production feasible engine concept, outlining the benefits available by doing so. The paper demonstrates the potential of a production-feasible 2.0 litre Central GDI engine to deliver in excess of 105 kW/litre, and yet to achieve less than 300 g/kW.h BSFC at 2000/2.0 bar BMEP with λ=1.0 Fuelling. In this way, the authors have achieved an efficiency value competitive with that of diesel engines, whilst retaining the cleaner combustion and simpler aftertreatment processes inherent with positive ignition gasoline engines, utilizing pre-mixed flame stoichiometric combustion.
