Studies from 2010 through 2019 were examined for good understanding of the impact of process parameters on solid-state anaerobic co-digestion (SSCOD). The core challenge in these studies was some inconsistent results in related experiments, which is solely attributed to the heterogenous nature of feedstocks, variations in the inherent chemical compositions of inocula, as well as the uniqueness in microbial communities. Interestingly unlike liquid-state anaerobic co-digestion, microbial diversity andpredominance in SSCOD seems to be affected by changes in volatile fatty acids (VFA) concentration. Concentration of total VFA:Ammonia, total VFA:Alkalinity, C/N, pH, and sodium between 0.25 - 2.88, 0.05 - 0.45, 12.5 -27.5,6.6- 8.1, and < 5% respectivelyseems to be the consistent threshold for process stability, as these ranges not only favor methanogens. It also prevents imbalance among the bacteria and archaea activities. Conclusively, favorable solid-state anaerobic co-digestion of various organic matters under suitable process parameters condition has the potential for huge bioenergy generation and biofertilizer production.
