The lightweight construction strategies of the automotive industry are determined by the legal requirements for reduced emission values for new vehicles. In addition to lightweight steels and plastic-metal hybrids, there is a trend towards combinations of continuous-fiber reinforcements in injection molding. These reinforcements are usually solid and limited in their drapability. Furthermore, the interface between reinforcement and injection-molding matrix poses a challenge that minimizes the process window. The innovation below shows an alternative solution to solid continuous-fiber reinforcements. It focuses on the processing of grid-like reinforcements made of glass fibers. Development and processing start on a one-dimensional plate level and end in a three-dimensional part.
