UNPACKING FOOD SAFETY REGULATIONS FOR PAPERBOARD

Consumers around the world are demanding more transparency about packaging, with a plethora of consumer groups ranging from the well informed, the well-meaning, to the well... With increased publicity comes a requirement for more diligence on packaging food safety from the industry, both manufacturers and users of Food contact materials. This presentation is an overview of where Fonterra has come from, and the journey it has taken in packaging compliance as one of New Zealand's biggest exporters of food stuffs around the world. Looking to the future we have a vision that will help us all to be better prepared for the changes that will no doubt happen in the space of Food contact compliance. Recent developments in Europe and the US has seen a sector of the Paper board industry collaborate to tackle the regulatory requirements, customer surveys, and environmental concerns using a software management tool. These types of collaborations help the industry to present a consistent and unified front to end users, to share learnings and understandings of existing and emerging regulations around the globe. In a similar manner, Fonterra are looking at software solutions to manage packaging compliance across our business. We are looking to bring our Packaging compliance documentation into the "on-line" era, allowing a more robust exchange of regulatory understanding and documentation. We will also be pointing packaging suppliers to packaging compliance consulting companies, to better utilise resource within their business, and encourage more understanding and training of existing and emerging regulatory concerns across the industry. We envision swifter approvals for new packaging developments, and improved interactions when regulations change, communications around hot topics, and a more efficient regulatory compliance faculty.
