Diversification of Alternative Energy Raw Materials for Home Industries

Indonesia's population is growing and so is its agricultural production. This condition increases the quantity of organic waste. There is one way to overcome this problem by processing organic waste into a product that has economic value. Coal briquettes are one example of the results of processing organic waste. This is in harmony with Indonesia's need for alternative energy. Since Indonesia is the largest archipelagic country in the world, it seeks to diversify its energy sources and fuels. Each region has its own natural resources, and so each region is expected to have an alternative source of raw materials for alternative energy. This will prevent the dependence of fuel supply from other regions. One way to promote the use of alternative energy is the development of domestically-produced alternative energy sources. Furthermore, Indonesia has also been concerned about the environmental effects of current energy use by using alternative energy sources that have the potential to produce lower emissions than traditional fossil fuels. To fulfill this requirement, coal briquettes must produce high calorific value, ease of burning, high mechanical strength, low ignition temperature, less ash and smoke emission. The result shows that wood charcoal, coconut shell, dried leaves and rice husks can be used as raw materials of coal briquettes. The combination of organic waste and coal as raw materials of briquettes produced environmentally safe energy.
