1D simulation models of hybrid diesel-driven railway vehicles are evaluated with the help of a Python based simulation tool. Two diesel-hydromechanic hybridized propulsion systems in combination with three different electrical energy storage systems based on batteries, double-layer capacitors and flywheel technology are regarded. The fuel saving potentials of the two hybrid diesel multiple units on a regional and a suburban service profile are investigated for different energy management strategies. Detailed life cycle cost analyses, taking into account the operation mode of a diesel multiple unit, show the cost savings which can be achieved with each type of storage system from a vehicle operators' point of view.
