Metrology is of much greater importance to the industrial world than may at first appear. Quality certification has often reduced industrial metrology to the model used in legal metrology, a model that is inappropriate to it. At the dawn of a new era, it is important to reposition the mission given to metrology and allow it to take its rightful place at the heart of the revolution of industrial practices ahead of us. This paper summarizes the new expectations that the company metrologist is likely to face. These are developed in greater detail in the book Smart Metrology - From the metrology of instrumentation to the metrology of decisions ("Smart Metrology: De la metrologie des instruments a la metrologie des decisions") published by AFNOR in 2016.
