Based on the investigation of Pb contents in surface waters in different seasons in the Jiaozhou Bay during 1979-1983, this paper analyzed the Pb sources and the variations in the Jiaozhou Bay. The results indicated that Pb in the Jiaozhou Bay were mainly sourced from stream flow, overland runoff, atmosphere deposition, marine current, the top of the island, and docks, whose source strengths were 0-75-3.35 μg L-1, 2.65-3.30 μg L-1, 0.69-2.55 μg L-1, 1.47-1.82 μg L-1, 0.76-3.34 μg L-1, and 2.39-3.25 μg L-1, respectively. According to the National Sea Water Quality Standard (GB 3097-1997) for Pb, the source strengths of Pb in the Jiaozhou Bay during 1979-1983 were confirmed to be Grade II or III generally, indicating that the pollution level of Pb in this bay was slight or moderate in the early stage of reform and opening-up. However, the source strengths of Pb were showing increasing trends along with time, and the source treatment of Pb is necessary for Pb pollution control in this bay.
