Developed an experimentally-validated framework for location specific control of melt pool geometry and microstructure: 1. Location-specific control of microstructure size and texture is achievable across alloy systems and processes; 2. This allows location-specific control of mechanical properties, and perhaps other properties; 3. Control of microstructure size and texture can be mapped to the control of melt pool size and shape; 4. Because melt pool size and shape can be monitored (see for instance the talk by Brian Fisher) it can be used to indirectly monitor microstructure.
