INFLUENCE OF RIDER ON LAMENESS IN THE SPORT HORSE

The rider, the rider-saddle-horse interaction, and lameness all influence the horse's gait. Due to the complexity of dynamic factors, accurate diagnosis of the underlying cause gait abnormalities observed during ridden evaluation is difficult.Horse activities are unique in the sporting world because it involves 2 athletes working, hopefully, in unison to accomplish an athletic event. Which means both the horse and the rider can influence the performance of the pair. Lameness is asymmetrical movement of gait and in the ridden horse, can be attributed to a variety of dynamic factors. Ridden evaluation is frequently performed in horses with mild or no visible lameness observed when exercise in hand. It can also be an important diagnostic tool for horses with ill-defined gait abnormalities such as bucking, rearing, bolting, lack of impulsion, decrease quality of gait, head carriage problems, and/or inability to perform specific movements when the horse is ridden. These multitude of types of complaints and other signs of poor performance often necessitate the ridden assessment of gait regardless of whether the baseline lameness is evident.
