Saxo turbine projects 11~e Chute HPP and Yellow Falls HPP

With over 40 commissioned units over the previous two decades, the double-regulated vertical axial water turbine, known as a Saxo turbine, has become well recognized product of Litostroj Power. Its compact design, wide operation range, high efficiency, simplified civil construction works, robustness, versatility, flexible operation, fully automatic and remote control, and easy maintenance made the turbine popular. The paper first presents general features of the Saxo “compact design philosophy” where transport, erection sequence, site installation works, delivery milestones and equipment costs are the main focus. The second part of the paper presents a true case study of two of the largest (by runner diameter) compact Saxo hydro-electrical projects where delivery time of approximately 20 months was achieved. Turbines were designed, delivered, installed and successfully commissioned on 11~e Chute and Yellow Falls hydro power projects with installed maximum capacity of 2 × 9.9 MW and 2 × 8.5 MW, respectively.
