Innovative Fish Protection using Non-Electrified and Electrified Flexible Fish Fences

The flexible fish fence consists of horizontally arranged steel cables. It is placed in front of the turbine intakes of hydropower plants in order to prevent fish from turbine- passage. The electric flexible fish fence is a significant advancement to the original prototype, as the steel cables are used as electrodes to create an electrical field. Due to the horizontal inclined inflow condition, fish are guided along the screen to a bypass located at the downstream end of the flexible fish fence. The electric flexible fish fence combines both, a physical and a behavioral barrier, which guides fish safely to tailwater (Aufleger et al., 2017).
