A novel and facile method for the electrochemical detection of Cu~(2+) was first developed by using a modified glass carbon (GC) electrode with 4'-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2,2':6',2"-terpyridine (p-HO-ptpy). P-HO-ptpy was first synthesized by Krohnke protocol and then modified onto GC electrode steadily. The modified GC electrode with unexpected high affinity for Cu~(2+) was used for the electrochemical analysis of trace Cu~(2+) by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The modified GC electrode was found to be highly selective to Cu~(2+) in the range of 0.2 - 30 μM with a detection limit of 60 nM. The modified electrode offered an excellent approach for the selective detection of Cu~(2+) in practical samples based on the dual responses of anode and cathodic currents.
