Myanmar’s booming economy and accompanying high electricity demand growth must be supported by a strong and reliable electrical power system. Currently, power cuts are frequent on a system involving a mix of hydroelectric and thermal generating capacity, with no on-grid renewables. Power projects harnessing Myanmar’s attractive wind and solar PV resources could help resolve the power shortages and would diversify energy sources. Because they are intermittent and non-dispatchable, however, it is clear that introducing wind and solar PV sources would transform the way the electrical power system is managed.
