For the following years current forecasts see a steady growth of transport of goods. The shortage of resources will lead to increasing costs and therefore will require economical solutions for OEMs as well as operators of commercial vehicles (CV). Besides measures on the vehicle side new powertrain topologies may significantly contribute to a reduction in operating costs which are main cost drivers. For defining CV power trains which are an optimum for the whole system it is necessary to improve all components in a system and not one for each other. Exemplarily new combustion engines realize the same power at lower engine speeds. Such changes have a direct effect on the required series of ratios of the transmission, on the torque which has to be transferred. The electrification of CV power trains offers further potentials to reduce the fuel consumption. Electric motors which have to be integrated into the power train increase its complexity and open up new possibilities for different hybrid topologies. The contribution concentrates on the effects such changes imply for the transmission. Thereby solutions of highly functional dual-clutch transmissions are in focus. These results are the basis for later comparisons with other transmission technologies, like AMT or AT. Such assessments may be done with regard to fuel consumption, design space, weight and costs. Target is to detect trends for the use of different transmission technologies in future CV applications by considering the changing boundaries.
