Comparing different kinds of materials for adsorption of pollutants in wastewater

Dirty water is the world's biggest health risk, and continues to threaten both quality of life and public health. Many of our water resources also lack basic protections, making them vulnerable to pollution from factory farms, industrial plants, and activities. Wastewaters are waterborne solids and liquids discharged into sewers that represent the wastes of community life. Primary and secondary treatment removes the majority of BOD and suspended solids found in wastewater. Additional treatment steps have been added to wastewater treatment plants to provide for further organic and solids removals or to provide for removal of nutrients and toxic materials. There have been several new developments in water treatment field in the last years. Graphene-based composite is a new type of nanometer material and shows much better adsorption capacity of pollutants than other materials. This paper summarized and compared the difference between graphene-based composites and other materials in removing various heavy metals and organic pollutants present in wastewater.
