Not all health problems in small poultry flocks are caused by disease. Much of the problems occurring in small flocks are due to the misunderstanding by the poultry flock owners. Owners attribute the characteristics of their previous cat, dog, or other pet to the poultry, in the fact that they expect them to be easy to raise and that they will live for 7 to 10 or more years. An egg-laying chicken that is 3 years old is an old chicken. The typical small flock owner purchases chicks and raises them tobe sexually mature. Little if any problems develop until the flock reaches 3 years of age. At that point, birds will start dying.
