For some dairy producers in the USA, it is common practice to switch the use of their usual post-milking teat disinfectants to winter-type products or powdered dips when ambient temperature drops below 0°C in the winter season. Previously it was demonstrated that an aqueous teat disinfectant performed better than a powder product with regards to teat skin and teat end condition when used during the winter period (Lopez Benavides et al, 2011). The use of barrier-type products during winter is less documented and merits investigation. Results of this study are associated with the use of a glycolic acid-based post-milking barrier teat disinfectant, OceanBlu~(TM) Barrier (OB; GlyTec~(TM) and 10% emollients; DeLaval) during the winter period. GlyTec~(TM) is a proprietary blend of glycolic acid and other ingredients (inc. 3% glycolic acid).
