Microstructures and Mechanical Properties of β-Sialon-cBN Composites

Si_(6-z)Al_zO_zN_(8-z)-cBN (where Si_(6-z)Al_zO_zN_(8-z) is P-Sialon and c-BN is cubic boron nitride) composites were prepared by the high temperature (1700°C) and high pressure (5GPa) sintering. The effects of the composite of p-Sialon (i.e., different z values) on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the β-Sialon-cBN composites were studied. The relative test results were verified by computer simulation. It was shown that, with the increasing z values of β-Sialon, the aluminum and oxygen content increase, and the densification and mechanical properties of β-Sialon-cBN composites decrease gradually.
