Corn cob cellulose was prepared by alkali-treatment method and grafted with acrylic acid and acrylamide using ammonium persulphate as an initiator and N,N0-methylenebisacrylamide as a cross-linker. The infiuences of monomer to cellulose ratio, initiator content, cross-linker content and reaction temperature on grafting efficiency were studied. The maximum grafting efficiency was achieved at 89% at the appropriate condition. Properties of grafted cellulose were characterized by SEM, FTIR, CHNO analysis and TGA. Poly(acrylic acid) and polyacrylamide modified cellulose were used as adsorbents for Cu(II) and Ni(II) removal from aqueous solution. The adsorption capacity was in the range of 8-12 mg g 1with the removal performance up to 52-99%.
