No more prescient thought could have come from one of our forefathers over 200 years ago as the United States (US) and the world enters the 21st century in the midst of controversy on the social, legal and medical use of marijuana. The conglomerationof fact and fantasy through personal experiences, public health concerns, legislative reactivity, and medical anecdotal reports has resulted in a stream of almost indecipherable internet information. To help clear the smoke over the controversy, the purpose of this presentation is to provide an overview of the current state of knowledge on the potential benefit that the active pharmacologic compounds of marijuana, A-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), may have in the treatment of epilepsy in general, and more specifically, in canine epilepsy.
