Lymphoma is usually considered a systemic disease; however in humans as well as dogs, primary cutaneous variants can arise. The nomenclature and classification systems of the cutaneous lymphomas in people are complex but are summarized below. In dogs, cutaneous lymphomas maybe either epitheliotropic on non-epitheliotropic, and may be either T-cell or B-cell. The most common form of cutaneous lymphoma in dogs is epitheliotropic T-cell lymphoma, which is somewhat analogous to mycosis fungoides (MF) inhumans and has been proposed as spontaneous animal model for that condition. However, there are phenotypic and clinical differences (see below, "Comparative Aspects") between canine epitheliotropic T-cell lymphoma and human mycosis fungoides.
